Transport Network Engineer

Great Plains Communications is looking for a high-energy, detail-oriented person to administer and maintain our Omaha area regional transport network.

This position is responsible for:

  • Researching, testing, configuring, provisioning, troubleshooting and maintaining network equipment
  • Designing of Layer 1 and Layer 2 services across the network.
  • Serving as a contact for high priority customers during outages and when other issues arise
  • Working with the sales team to provide engineering support for proposals and presentations
  • Serving as a project manager by assigning staff and resources on various projects
  • Serving as a Tier 3 support resource for access platforms including GPON and Active-E

Successful candidate must have advanced knowledge of telephony and central office equipment, basic electricity, SONET hierarchy, Ethernet/IP Transport, VoIP networks, data circuits, transmission equipment, and fiber networks.  Experience with Calix and Ciena equipment is desired.  Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, written and verbal communication skills, and customer relation skills are a must.  Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to work outside normal business hours and be on-call as necessary.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field, plus three to five years of industry experience is desired.  MEF 2.0 certification is a plus.
